Char & Biochar
The potential for
char is summarized in West
Biofuels' paper covering the subject.
Char and biochar are outputs from gasifiers. Depending on feedstock and
how the gasifiers are configured, Advanced Gasification can either eliminate
char altogether or produce up to 30% by volume. Char looks similar to wood
charcoal, but varies in size and chemical content.
Char can be used for a variety of purposes and can be
valuable depending on its end use, which ranges from filtration medium ("activated
charcoal") to use as a soils supplement and more.
Our partners West Biofuels' summary of the current state of char's potential
points out that high values are possible, but this depends greatly on the
feedstock. For more information contact Pivotal.
